Medication Management

Psychiatric medication management is the ongoing, collaborative process of prescribing, monitoring, and adjusting mental-health medications to maximize benefit and minimize risk. It often works best alongside psychotherapy, skills training, and healthy lifestyle changes.

What it is

Why it matters

What to expect

1) Initial evaluation
We review your symptoms, past treatments, medical history, current medications/supplements, allergies, substance use, and goals. If medication is appropriate, or you are already taking some medications, we discuss options—including expected benefits, common side effects, black-box warnings (if any), and monitoring needs.

2) Shared decision-making
You decide whether to start a medicine. If you do, we agree on a plan for dose, timing, and how we’ll measure progress.

3) Trial period & follow-ups
Medications are usually started at a low dose and adjusted over several weeks. Follow-up visits track mood, anxiety, sleep, energy, concentration, appetite, and daily functioning. We also review side effects and practical issues like cost and adherence.

4) Safety monitoring
When indicated, we may check vitals, labs, weight, EKGs, or drug–drug interactions (especially for lithium, valproate, carbamazepine, certain antipsychotics, and some antidepressants). We also review pregnancy plans and substance/alcohol use.

5) Optimization over time
If a medicine isn’t effective or causes troublesome effects, we modify the dose, switch, or combine treatments. As you improve, we’ll space visits out and revisit whether to continue, taper, or simplify your regimen.

Who might consider Medication Management

Key components of good Management

Important reminders

1. Medications manage symptoms; they don’t “cure” conditions. Many people do best with medication + psychotherapy.

2. Do not stop suddenly. Abrupt changes can cause withdrawal or relapse—always consult your prescriber first.

3. Tell your clinician about all prescriptions, over-the-counter meds, and supplements to prevent interactions.

4. If you’re pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, discuss risks and options early.
